Demystifying CSS Grid Track Distribution: The Mechanics of justify-content, align-content, and the Fractional Unit Dilemma
In the W3C CSS Box Alignment Module Level 3, layout systems introduced a unified vocabulary for positioning elements across Flexbox, CSS Grid, and multi-column containers. However, among front-end developers transitioning from Flexbox to CSS Grid, few properties create as much confusion as justify-content and align-content. Developers frequently declare justify-content: center or space-between on grid containers, only to observe absolutely zero visual change in their rendered layout. Understanding this behavior requires dissecting the two distinct tiers of alignment in two-dimensional grid geometry.
Track Distribution (Content) vs. Item Alignment (Items)
The critical distinction lies in what entity the CSS property manipulates:
1. justify-items & align-items (Individual Cell Alignment)
These properties govern how an individual grid child element positions itself inside its assigned grid area/cell. By default, grid items are set to stretch, expanding to fill the entire column and row track cell boundaries. Changing justify-items: center pulls the item away from cell borders and centers it within its individual cell box.
2. justify-content & align-content (Track Distribution)
These properties align the entire grid track structure relative to the parent container. If your grid container is 1000px wide, but your grid columns total only 600px wide, there is 400px of surplus free space along the inline axis. justify-content determines where that 400px gap goes: packed at the start, centered in the middle, or distributed evenly between the column tracks.
The "Fractional Unit (`1fr`)" Trap
The primary reason justify-content appears broken in production code is the use of fractional units (1fr) in track definitions:
.grid-container {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: repeat(3, 1fr);
justify-content: space-between;
}
Why this happens: The fr unit represents a flexible share of remaining space. When tracks use 1fr, the CSS Grid layout engine calculates available container space and expands the tracks to consume 100% of that space. Because the tracks expand completely to the container boundaries, the remaining free space along the inline axis is exactly 0 pixels. Consequently, declaring space-between, space-around, or center distributes 0px of free space, leaving the layout visually identical to default stretch behavior.
To activate justify-content, track sizes must be fixed or bounded (e.g. 120px, minmax(80px, max-content), or fixed rem/em units) so that surplus space remains within the parent grid container.
Deconstructing Distribution Modifiers
When surplus space exists along the inline or block axis, justify-content provides several distinct distribution modes:
start&end: Packs the entire track matrix flush against the start (left in LTR) or end edge of the container, leaving all free space on the opposing side.center: Packs all tracks tightly together in the exact middle of the container, dividing remaining space equally between left and right margins.space-between: The first column track is pinned flush to the container start edge; the final column track is pinned flush to the container end edge. All remaining free space is divided equally as gutters between adjacent tracks.space-around: Surplus space is divided equally among all tracks, with each track receiving half-width spacing on outer ends and full-width spacing between interior neighbors.space-evenly: Free space is distributed so that the distance between any two adjacent tracks, as well as the distance between outer tracks and container edges, is mathematically identical.
Interaction with CSS Subgrid and Container Queries
In modern responsive component architecture, combining track distribution with Container Queries (@container) enables widgets to adapt their layout dynamically based on parent container width rather than device viewport width. Fixed-width card decks can switch from justify-content: center in compact sidebars to justify-content: space-between in wider dashboard views without altering DOM element markup.

📐 Grid Alignment Takeaway
Remember: justify-items aligns items inside their grid cells, while justify-content aligns the entire grid track structure inside the container. To see justify-content in action, ensure your tracks do not use 1fr. Save your custom track layouts to the local History Log with distinct profile names for reproducible design references.
